It was one fine Sunday morning my father out of now
where posed a question while I was savoring my “hand-made” coffee, Have you
read “The godfather”, by Mario Puzo? I was caught off guard, as I was imbued to
the daily routine of, Have you decided what to do after B-Tech? Have you gone
through the article in today’s newspaper titled “Auto Rickshaw’s Son clears
CA”? :/ :P
I went on to read the novel for a consecutive 17 days (couldn’t give more than 3hrs a day :P), one would be awestruck by the way Mario Puzo writes, if it wasn’t for Godfather, he would not have penned a classic masterpiece, which was then made into a movie eventually bagging a record 7 Oscars! And so did the sequel to the movie.
Don Corleone is one of the powerful characters I have
ever read about, though a
fiction one could feel his presence, so powerful, so ruthless and fearful.
No, I said, was I supposed to? My father gave a look
as in You suck! He said, with a frown “Then you have read nothing” and he left.
I at that time, was really into Sidney Sheldon’s works, and considered every
other author as a “far cry from the original”. Out of curiosity I reached the
shelf where the novels rested and picked The Godfather, and went through the
gist of the story at the back of the book, and was “hooked”.

"Known
for the power he wields and the fear he instils, people are in awe at his aura
and clout-some respect Him (‘H’ this is for a reason), some fear Him, and some
oblige for the want of an option"
.
The book so gives you a deep insight into the Mafia
world, which has its roots in Sicily, but more explicitly into the art of
contemporary writing. Ranging from the mafia in Sicily to the love, gamble and
sex in America and most importantly the Don’s influence, which reaches every
level of the American Society the book, has everything one could possibly
imagine or rather may run out of imagination.
If it were not for my dad I would have never read a
novel, “so turbulent, so exciting, and highly entertaining”. More or less the
credit goes to my dad himself for buying the book.
Here are few of the quotes that possibly may not be
penned for a centuries to come, which could have been written only by Mario Puzo.
- “He has seen the light of life die in the man’s eye as
clearly as the candle goes out”
- “Fannuci (a character in the novel) never retreats, I
will reason with him”
- “Time erodes gratitude more quickly than it erodes
Beauty”
- “Only the Great Don could steal a stalemate from this
terrible defeat and if it were to come his Death”
- “Every piece of shit, every man eats; every single day
in his life is fucking personal”
- “Revenge is a dish that tastes best, when it’s cold”
- “Though women certainly will be saints in heaven, we
men burn in hell"
As my Dad said, if one who is imbued to reading
fiction, if you haven’t read The Godfather then you have read nothing! It might be my Favorite novel of
all time, one can speak endlessly about the novel, the protagonist (who is
everything in the novel), but then there is no point in explicitly describing
the novel as such on a blog.

Can't agree more. Godfather is definitely one hell of a book and it sure is captivating.
When a person reads this book, it is difficult for him to get out of the book and the characters revolve in his mind.
Kudos to Mario Puzo, one legendary writer.
(I wonder how a person with such a funny name can write such awesome stuff.) ;-)
:D
Well, another legendary poet "Shakespeare" said, "What's in a name?" :)
haha! Very true! ;-)
